Project description
Strengthening Belize’s capacity to adapt to climate change through integrated and inclusive planning was the central objective of this project, which supported the development of a Multisectoral National Adaptation Plan (MNAP). The initiative aimed to identify and prioritise adaptation solutions across key sectors while ensuring that adaptation planning addressed the needs of vulnerable groups, including children, youth, women, indigenous peoples and rural communities.
The work included a comprehensive review of existing policies, strategies, studies and datasets, complemented by consultations with key stakeholders to assess climate risks, vulnerabilities and adaptation opportunities. Particular attention was given to five priority sectors: land use and infrastructure, tourism, human health, agriculture and forestry. Based on this analysis, potential adaptation measures were identified and evaluated through a structured prioritisation framework that considered technical, economic, social and environmental criteria, as well as implementation feasibility and alignment with national development objectives.
The consultancy also supported the identification of priority interventions with potential to access climate finance, including opportunities for Green Climate Fund (GCF) support. The results were consolidated into a roadmap and an inclusive MNAP, providing a strategic framework to strengthen resilience, improve coordination across sectors and support long-term climate adaptation planning in Belize.
