Project description
The consultancy supported the World Bank in assessing the clean cooking market in Guatemala, with a particular focus on the ten departments with the lowest levels of access to electricity. The study analysed current cooking practices, including firewood consumption, and evaluated opportunities to promote cleaner and more efficient cooking solutions.
The work included a review of the policy and regulatory framework, an assessment of demand-side characteristics, and an analysis of the availability and supply of clean cooking technologies and services. Information was collected through the 2023 National Living Conditions Survey (ENCOVI), literature reviews, existing studies, interviews and focus group discussions with key stakeholders, in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of market conditions and the barriers to the adoption of these technologies.
In addition, the consultancy assessed alternative clean cooking solutions, including gas, electricity, induction technologies and solar-based options, analysing their suitability for different local contexts and projecting alternative adoption scenarios. The project concluded with a set of findings and policy recommendations aimed at supporting the transition towards cleaner, more efficient and sustainable cooking systems in Guatemala.
