Adaptation of municipalities to extreme weather events

The study analysed the adaptation of Spanish municipalities to extreme weather events (EWEs), with a particular focus on heatwaves and floods. The objective was to assess the exposure of municipalities to climate-related risks, identify suitable adaptation measures, evaluate existing adaptation efforts and highlight examples of good and bad practices in local climate planning.

The work included the collection and analysis of information on climatic conditions and extreme weather risks affecting urban municipalities across Spain, as well as the development of a methodology for selecting the municipalities to be assessed. A detailed analysis was then carried out for the selected municipalities, examining climate risks, potential impacts and the adequacy of existing adaptation responses.

The project also evaluated municipal adaptation planning and identified lessons learned from current practices. The results were consolidated into a final report and complemented by visual communication materials, including infographics summarising the main findings and recommendations to support local adaptation to extreme weather events.
